Bruno Builds a House
Bruno, an orphaned polar bear cub, was discovered by world explore, Sir Montgomery Wickham while on an Artic expedition. Taken to live with Monty’s sister and her family in Baltimore, Maryland, Bruno has become best friends with her young son, Artie. After a few months our story takes place.
One morning when Artie was eating his eggs and toast his father folded his newspaper and said, “Artie, we have to have a talk about Bruno.”
Now Bruno was a year-old polar bear that Artie’s Uncle Monty had given him to raise. Bruno was just a cub when he came to live with the Peabodys, but he had grown much bigger since then.
“Both your mother and I feel he’s just getting too big to live in the house any longer.”
“He is bigger,” Artie aggreed, hoping that this didn’t mean Bruno would have to move away, “but I could make more room for him. There’s a lot of stuff in my room that I could get rid of.”
“I’m sure you could, but that’s not the point. We, that is your mother and I, don’t want Bruno to move out, we just need to find a better way to keep him. There was another hole in your bedroom wall last week, and well, your mother tripped over his leg in the upstairs hall while she was carrying the laundry downstairs.”
“Yeah, he does kind of stick out of the room when he sleeps,” Artie replied remembering the noise that woke him up that morning.
“You see son, he’s not only too big for your room, he’s getting too big for the house.”
“I know, we could make him a house, of his very own, like the Clancy’s did when their dog got to be so big.” Artie could already see what a nice house it would be, with Buno’s name painted over the door.
“Yes, that is a possibility,” he father said. “Our lot is big enough for a nice shelter fro Bruno. You two talk it over and see what ideas you come up with. I’m off to work.”
It didn’t take long to get Bruno interested in the idea. Bruno was always interested in a challenge, especially a big one. And building his own house seemed like just the thing a grown-up bear should do.
“I can play my music late at night, if I want to,” Bruno said, “as loud as I want.”
“We’ll have to see about that.” Artie hoped that Buno wouldn’t be a noisy neighbor. “So what do we do first?”
“Find just the right spot I should think,” Bruno replied heading out into the back yard.
They hiked all around in the large area behind the house checking the view from various directions and pretty soon they decided on the perfect spot to build the house.
Bruno and Artie started to dig the foundation. It was very hard work. Artie found tin cans and an old skate and Bruno found a bugle. After a while, they were both a little disappointed at how little they had accomplished.
“This is going to take forever,” Artie said finally, hoping that it was time for lunch.
“I know,” said Bruno, “ but I have an idea,” and he started off toward the house. Artie, knowing that Bruno always had definite ideas, decided he would have some lunch and let whatever Bruno did be a surprise. It was certain to be a surprise anyway.
When Artie came out after lunch he saw the garden hose snaking its way over to the building site.
“I decided that a swimming pool was a much better idea, than a basement,” said Bruno, floating comfortably on his favorite inner tube.
Artie stood watching for a minute. “You’re never going to get your new house built by lying around in the sun.”
“Ofcourse, I know that,” Bruno replied. “That’s what tomorrows are for.”
Artie knew he couldn’t argue with a bear who had decided it was “swimming time”, so he went into the house, got into his swim trunks and soon two inner tubes floated in the pool.
